The Beginning....

Well, one more week (as I write this) and the BS stops. Over the European winter, we've had just about every breed of car in the field claiming to have set the fastest laps in winter testing. But would you have your money on anything other than a McLaren or a Ferrari? Only the brave would... The BAR has been quick out of the box - once. The Jordan has done pretty well too, as has the Stewart, although Johnny Herbert might be having second thoughts after coming unglued the other day!

Which brings up an interesting point - flexible wings. Did you even know they had them? Seems that the wing mounts are sufficiently flexible that as the speed increases, the wings lean back further and thus create less drag. Only trouble is, sometimes they lean back so far the things fall off, as happened to Johnny. It's against the rules, but it's hard to police as there has to be some flexibility, otherwise the first lap would have them falling off. Now it takes a few more laps before they fall off. Aren't designers clever? Easy way to lose weight off the back of the car. And downforce...

The McLaren had a somewhat inauspicious debut. Couldn't even complete one lap. If anyone believes that is a portent of things to come, I got bad news for you. And with Ferrari being basically in hiding, no-one really knows who is quickest. And then there is Benetton with their Torque Transfer braking system, which is legal/illegal depending on who you listen to. Illegal if you listen to the other major teams, who also admit that they have their own system ready to go if is proven legal. And legal according to Charlie White at the FIA. Want to bet a South American steward can't override him this year?

And then there is BAR with their dopey color scheme. If that doesn't confuse Muddly Talker, nothing will! I'm not sure where Pollock is coming from, considering the drama with tobacco advertising in motor sports. To make it as blatant as he has is asking for trouble which it seems like he's going to get (ah,us reformed smokers can be bitchy, can't we?)

I had the driver listing in here, as you know, but even now - one week from the start of the first race, there are still a couple of seats going begging. How would you like to be having your first run in a car at the official practice session? Yeah,right...

Ain't F1 fun?

If you want to argue, email me. I can always hit the DELETE key...
